Do you know what packaging materials are available? Apart from the common plastic, paper and glass, bamboo is emerging as a leading sustainable packaging material due to its low-carbon and eco-friendly features. This article will focus on altPlus' packaging application solutions, in particular our recently launched new product, engineered bamboo packaging for white spirits, as well as the practical application of the international brand Lipton in sustainable packaging.
Diverse Packaging Materials
Packaging is an integral part of our daily lives, from coffee cups to online shopping boxes. However, there are many different packaging materials, which are suitable for different scenarios and have different characteristics, let's get to know these packaging materials together!

Plastics
●Lightweight: plastic packaging material density, light weight, easy to carry and transport.
●Durable: plastic packaging has better impact resistance and compression resistance, which can protect the items inside the package from damage.
●Low price: plastic packaging materials from a wide range of sources, the production process is mature, making its cost relatively low.

Paper
●Environmentally friendly: Paper-based packaging has a lower environmental impact compared to plastic.
●Good printability: flat surface, easy to print and decorate, suitable for brand promotion
Glass
●High transparency: glass can clearly display items and increase the attractiveness of products.
●Good sealing: the glass has excellent sealing performance, which can effectively prevent the product from moisture or oxidation.
●Recyclable: glass can be recycled again and again and is friendly to the environment.
While plastic, paper and glass each have their own characteristics, they also have limitations. As environmental awareness increases, more and more companies and consumers are looking for greener packaging materials, such as bamboo.
Bamboo
●Biodegradability: Bamboo products are biodegradable, allowing them to decompose naturally at the end of their lifecycle, reducing environmental impact from waste disposal.
●Sustainable resource utilization: Bamboo grows rapidly, usually much faster than most trees, and can be harvested in a short period of time, reducing dependence on forest resources.
●Natural beauty: Bamboo has a unique natural texture and can also be dyed and processed to present a variety of colours and appearances to meet different needs.
The Ideal choice for Sustainable packaging
altPlus is also researching the benefits of bamboo as a sustainable packaging material. Recently, altPlus has continued to focus on the concept of sustainability for a new product (engineered bamboo packaging for white spirits), comparing different materials and finally deciding to use engineered bamboo to complete the product design and production.

Lipton:New Packaging Design
China, not only rich in bamboo resources, but also abundant in tea resources. In 1992, Lipton entered the Chinese market and started a new business model.
Working with the Unilever team, altPlus members supported the transfer of the concept through the industrial design and development process to manufacturing. Inspired by sustainable material usage, with an emphasis on luxury applications, this collaboration demonstrated the beauty and functionality of engineered bamboo.
The product was distributed globally to all 5-star hotels in a successful program run by the Unilever team, with the tea chest exhibiting a solid, custom-fabricated, engineered bamboo body.

This box used an ABS insert to hold the tea options, and at the time it used 100% polymer based materials. However, with further technological advancements, we can offer ABS inserts with 40% bamboo fibre content using altPlus BaMatrix™ products, which are more environmentally friendly and healthy.
Lipton is also paying more attention to sustainability in the design of its packaging materials.
In 2018, Lipton became the first company to make plant-based biodegradable teabags using PLA (Poly Lactic Acid, made from the starches and sugars of corn, completely biobased). Lipton is eliminating all unnecessary packaging and ensuring that what remains is recyclable or compostable.
