"Bamboo Swing” by Ateliers PHI + altPlus is shortlisted in Moganshan Fuxi River Bridge Competition

Fuxi River Seven Bridges Conceptual Design International Competition is one of the important starting projects of Moganshan Fuxi Water Street Commercial Complex. Organized by Deqing County Cultural Tourism Development Group Co., Ltd and co-organized by Young Bird Plan. The competition seeks innovative and forward-thinking conceptual designs that are diverse in architecture, landscape, bridge and art fields from talented designers, passionate amateurs, and design firms domestically and worldwide. By creating seven footbridges for Fuxi Water Steet, this project establishes a correct approach to opening up Moganshan, while showcasing an international lifestyle image. The design integrates landscape nodes with pedestrian-friendly and inclusive spaces, allowing residents and visitors to enjoy the stunning scenery of lush mountains, it also creates a harmonious blend of work and leisure, elevating the town to a desirable tourism destination.

A notable turnout of 500 design groups and individuals from both domestic and international markets registered for the highly anticipated competition. After three months of rigorous competition, the panel of judges meticulously evaluated each proposal and ultimately selected the "Bamboo Swing" design proposal submitted by the Ateliers PHI + altPlus consortium (competition number: YBMoganshan-140327) as one of the shortlisting. Our proposition showcases an unwavering commitment to sustainability, renewability, and eco-friendliness, utilizing renewable materials such as engineered bamboo, which reflects the abundance of bamboo resources and the rich cultural heritage of Moganshan. As a rapidly growing and renewable resource, bamboo boasts a short growth cycle, requiring only 3-5 years to reach maturity. Furthermore, bamboo forests possess a tremendous carbon sequestration capacity, with each cubic meter of bamboo able to store 1.2 tons of carbon dioxide. This is 35% more than that of wood, making bamboo an even more environmentally friendly option for carbon storage.

Engineered bamboo composite (EBC) materials, manufactured through physical and chemical methods, exhibit exceptional physical and mechanical properties, providing numerous advantages in terms of dimensional stability, tensile and compressive strength, corrosion resistance, and bending performance. Consequently, these materials are highly resistant to erosion from a range of natural environments and are frequently implemented in various fields, including geotechnical engineering, irrigation works, road engineering, and bridge engineering. The superior qualities of EBC have positioned them as a highly sought-after choice among professionals seeking resilient and sustainable construction materials.

The seven bridges employ altPlus’ LVB material, it aligns with our commitment to sustainability and environmentally friendly manufacturing practices, significantly reducing carbon emissions during the project development process. altPlus® LVB M series PSB M series represents a second-generation of structural engineered bamboo composite material, characterized by standardized production sizing and shape. The material's structural components can be prefabricated in the factory, allowing for highly prefabricated construction. This streamlined approach not only accelerates construction and installation speed but also minimizes any disruption to natural environments and historical cultural resources.

Moreover, designers have prioritized the concept of barrier-free design, taking the elderly and disabled’s needs into consideration. Therefore, the bridges have minimal slope, allowing disabled people to access and pass with wheelchairs, creating a safe and convenient urban facility suitable for people of all ages and abilities. Additionally, engineered bamboo structures provide equivalent fire safety to traditional building structures. Despite being of the same thickness, engineered bamboo delivers a thermal insulation value 14 times higher than concrete and 300 times greater than steel. Such advantages ensure that the engineered bamboo structure has a lifespan of at least 50 years, providing exceptional aesthetic value for a range of living, working, and leisure environments. Ultimately, this contributes to enhancing the overall happiness index of users, making it a valuable and enduring investment for the community.

At altPlus, we believe a good bridge design must seamlessly integrate function, form, and structure. Our engineered bamboo bridge blends harmoniously with Deqing's local bamboo culture, producing a poetic and picturesque experiences for tourists. Besides, our bamboo-based solution showcases the cutting-edge engineering technology in a sustainable development method. We look forward to constructing a bridge in Deqing that embodies the poetic and low-carbon concepts, leading the way towards a green and sustainable way of life. This will be a bridge that surpasses mere utility, becoming an enduring landmark that reflects the values and aspirations of local community.
