International Bamboo and Rattan Organization (INBAR) Garden stands out with its unique bamboo theme at the main venue of the 2024 Chengdu World Expo. As the largest of the international pavilions, the 5,800-square-metre space is made entirely of low-carbon and environmentally friendly bamboo, with two very different styles of architecture. One in Baroque classical style and the other in Chinese garden style, perfectly blending the essence of traditional and modern, Chinese and European design.
Chinse Garden, Beautiful
The "Fish and Bamboo Pavilion" is a special bamboo building constructed by the INBAR. The building features a baroque classical style roof design, full of rich European charm.Through round bamboo structures, reconstituted bamboo tiles, woven bamboo cladding, as well as bamboo furniture and bamboo umbrella lamps, the Bamboo Pavilion subtly demonstrates the unique appeal of raw bamboo materials in architectural design.
Unlike this European architectural style, the Chinese flavour of the Western Shu garden landscaping looks distinctive. Bamboo forests, bamboo pavilions, bamboo bridges, rocks, and many Chinese garden elements are displayed. But the most attractive is an engineering bamboo structure built near the water, called "You Huang Xuan," its more than 100 square metres of space are made from engineering bamboo.
The designer of the park said that engineered bamboo has the potential to replace mainstream building materials such as concrete, steel and wood, and hoped that the exhibition platform would enable more people to understand and use this material.
Engineered bamboo structures, processed through industrial methods including sawing, splitting, rough planing, carbonization, and more than a dozen other processes, eliminate natural defects in raw bamboo material. This controls the moisture content of the product, ensuring it has excellent mechanical properties, dimensional stability, and good durability. These features make engineered bamboo particularly suitable for constructing low-rise and multi-story buildings.
At the same time, the designer shared that bamboo building materials products have good carbon sequestration performance, rapid growth, short maturing time, and are effective in mitigating global climate change, making them a friendly partner for sustainable development. This is why the INBAR has specifically chosen round and engineered bamboo as the structural material for the construction of the 2024 Chengdu World Expo, with the aim of making more people aware of the sustainability of bamboo in the construction sector.
