On 28 October 2024, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) officially released the ISO 7567:2024 "Bamboo structures – Glued laminated bamboo – Product specification". This milestone marks a significant step towards the global stadardization of engineered bamboo products reinforcing their ecological and structural value. In this article, we explore the profound impact of the standard on the industry's development and highlights how altPlus M Series™ LVB products serve as a pivotal example in advancing the application of engineered bamboo in modern architecture.
A Unified Professional Standard for Bamboo Innovation
Since the project's initiation in October 2021, a dedicated team led by Professor Li Haitao from Nanjing Forestry University and Professor Mahmud Ashraf from Deakin University, in collaboration with expert representatives from China, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, the United States, Canada, and Colombia, worked tirelessly to draft the standard, conducting multiple consultations and reviews.
Following voting by member states, the standard was officially published and implemented. ISO 7567:2024 – "Bamboo Structures – Glued Laminated Bamboo – Product Specification" comprises eight chapters and four annexes, systematically outlining the scope of application, terminology, symbols, bamboo units, material properties, processing, product delivery, quality control, and performance testing of structural glued laminated bamboo products.
This milestone paves the way for widespread adoption of bamboo in structural applications glued laminated bamboo products in structural fields, including large-scale electromechanical equipment packaging, construction, and bridge engineering.
Industry Impacts
●Standardizing Product Quality: The standard provides unified technical specifications for the design, production, and performance of structural glued laminated bamboo products. This enhances quality control, offers clear benchmarks for manufacturers and users, and drives technological advancements in the industry.
●Enhancing International Competitiveness: Products certified under ISO standards can more easily access global markets, meeting the high standards of the construction industry's demand for green materials. This helps enterprises build credibility and strengthen their competitiveness internationally.
●Promoting Sustainability: As a renewable material, engineered bamboo aligns with global sustainability goals. The standard lays a foundation for its large-scale commercialization, reducing reliance on non-renewable materials and cutting carbon emissions in the construction industry.
●Expanding Applications: Beyond traditional uses, the standard supports the broader application of bamboo in high-rise buildings, infrastructure, and other structural fields.
M Series™ LVB:Bamboo Structures Excellence
Glued laminated bamboo, one of the most widely used engineered bamboo products globally, holds immense potential for future engineering applications.
M Series LVB™ Laminated Veneer Bamboois specially developed as a structural composite lumber made from rapidly renewable bamboo timber resources. This grade contains high quality bamboo fibers (Phyllostachys Edulis), combined with thermal processing and structural grade low V.O.C. (LEED qualified) adhesive.
It has excellent properties for dimensional structural members and is the most dynamic in configuration and shape of EBC materials, allowing for sustainable construction to be free form and natural.
M Series LVB™ is a second-generation structural engineered bamboo material and the first-volume produced standard structural coomposite lumber that delivers consistent and reliable performance. It can be applied in structural systems, general and hybrid construction, furniture, finishes, and industriaI applications.
Key advantages of M Series™ LVB:
●Carbon Sequestration: Sequesters approximately 1.7 kg of carbon per square meter, contributing to carbon reduction goals.
●High Load-Bearing Capacity: Reduces material usage by minimizing the size and cross-section of structural components while optimizing space.
●Versatile Specifications: Available in a wide range of sizes and configurations to suit diverse applications.
●Aesthetic Appeal: Offers a warm, natural texture that enhances architectural designs.
●Cost Efficiency: Uniform density reduces the need for connectors, lowering construction costs.
●Sustainably Sourced Materials: Derived from FSC-certified bamboo forests for environmentally responsible construction.
